Micaëla Clarke

Fantasy Author & Freelance Writer

Micaëla (she/they) is a queer speculative fiction and fantasy writer living in Victoria, BC. She studied art history and writing at UVic, where she graduated with a BFA. Originally from the prairies, Micaëla is inspired by the north and all it has to offer. They also draw from myth, legend, history, and her own imagination.

Being a writer has been her dream since she was a child. Micaëla is currently working on several long-form projects, most notably a fantasy pirate adventure novel and an occult fantasy novel. They’re very excited to be doing freelance writing for both Factinate and None More Dark Publishing.

I want to acknowledge and express my respect for the Lekwungen, Songhees, and W̱SÁNEĆ peoples, whose care of and connection to the land has continued for thousands of years. It is a great privilege to live, learn, and write in these unceded territories.

Veilweaver

Twenty-year-old Cylla is chronically anxious and desperate to prove she’s more than the town weirdo who sees ghosts. Despite carving out a place for herself as an artisan, Cylla has never been accepted within the town's social circles. She assumes this is how her life will always be. But when her town is plagued by night terrors and sleep screaming, she seizes the opportunity to change her fate.

She teams up with a yellow-eyed traveler—Colm—who arrived suspiciously on the same night the nightmares did. He’s at least as much of an outsider as Cylla is, and she’s drawn to him and the separation of his body and spirit, which only she can see. Cylla bargains with him to take her south to find the sorcerer Colm seeks, in the hopes that they can help her, too. As they set off on their journey, they find a tenuous companionship in their mutual strangeness.

But Colm’s past catches up to them as they travel, and Cylla discovers something about the nightmares and the screaming that she can’t ignore. It also brings into question what she and her ghostly abilities are truly capable of. Will Cylla be able to forge a new path for herself and save her town from their curse amidst mercenaries, bestial transformations, betrayal, and the quest of finding the sorcerer?

Leviathan Song

Mercy has given up on being at sea after earning herself a firebrand reputation for fighting, insubordination, and seeing a legendary Moonfish where there wasn't one. She makes a small life for herself in the Triumvirate Republic of Swirlsea, where she hopes that her tight-laced, pugnacious girlfriend, Amylda, has enough resolve to keep her in line.

Alas, the merblin's call for thievery is seductive and Mercy gives in to her impulses. But then Amylda catches Mercy with stolen loot and turns her in, which is frustrating. Because of this, Mercy then faces imprisonment and a possible death sentence, which is even more frustrating. But circumstances change at her tribunal, when the overseers offer her a deal: either find and deliver the Leviathan Crosta Se’s coordinates within the month, or Amylda will take the full extent of Mercy’s punishment. Despite the animosity between them, the choice is obvious.

When Mercy comes face-to-beak with Crosta Se the Leviathan, she realizes the whole ocean is at stake if it dies. The survival of so many beings, and Mercy’s own future, hinges on this creature's existence and on the existence of all Leviathans. Mercy searches for answers, both about her world and herself, and learns more than a few lessons. The truth of the Triumvirate's actions unravel, and Mercy has to decide which role she wants to play. Will she follow the role dictated to her by society, or will she bring about a new age of healing in the northern ocean?
